I didn't look at the reviews until after I bought Born a Crime and read it for myself. While reading the 1 star reviews, out of curiosity, I was shocked at some of the negative reviews. Life in third world countries is different than what you would experience in America or other developed countries. Culturally they have beliefs, behaviors, and/or customs that may be considered weird or ugly to those who are not familiar. In my opinion, I believe Trevor Noah wrote wonderfully. He was completely transparent with his feelings, thoughts and experiences as a child growing up in an abusive third world country under apartheid and the aftermath. One reviewer spoke of a horrific animal situation (it was terrible and I do not support animal cruelty of any sort) but you have to remove yourself from it. If you are mad because he didn't respond the way YOU wanted, obviously there is a lack of understanding of his situation in life (I am not in anyway saying it was ok but it is a product of his environment). He was writing about his thoughts (he had at that moment), as a child growing up in a culture/society with ugly thoughts about that particular animal (I'm attempting to not give away any part of the plot while writing this). He was a product of his in environment and if he was taught something else maybe he would of had a different reaction at that time. I thought about giving the book a 5 star but I noticed all the existing reviews so I decided to reach those who would read the negative reviews, like myself, before purchasing a book. I thoroughly enjoyed Born a Crime. There were times I laughed. Times where I was utterly shocked. And a time when I got a bit emotional. Trevor Noah did a great job explaining the horrors of domestic violence and the lack of protection for women and children that still exists all over the world today. The nonexistent opportunities for children of poverty in third world countries especially regarding education. Being in an i nterracial marriage in America, I CANNOT fully understand what it must of been like for Trevor Noah's parents or as a mixed child growing up in such a hateful yet separated society. This is just my opinion. Take it for what it is. I don't review a lot of books anymore, but this one got to me. There are lots of books written by people -- including me -- who had a hard time growing up. Abusive parents, poverty, oppression. War. There is a lot of awful stuff children endure.Trevor Noah endured all of it. Name something bad that a kid can experience and it probably happened to him. Born under apartheid, his existence was illegal. His birth was, as the title of his book suggests, a crime.As the child of a white father and a black mother under South Africa during apartheid, if he had been noticed by the authorities, they would have taken him from his family and put him ... somewhere. So merely surviving until the end of apartheid was no mean feat. Add to that extreme poverty, violence and life under the most oppressive, racist regime you can imagine. Actually, you may not be able to imagine it. I knew it was bad, but South Africa refined oppression into an art form.One of the other noteworthy things about this book was that I learned great deal about things I thought I already knew. I don't know if Noah intended it as a cautionary tale, but it is. Chilling.I didn't read the book. I listened to the audiobook because Noah reads it himself. He has a beautiful, melodic voice and a lovely cadence. It was a treat for my ears and my brain.You might think with all of this terrible stuff -- and some of it is really horrific -- that this would be an angry, possibly embittered man. But he isn't.He's funny when humor is possible. Even when he's serious, there is grace and wit -- plus a sweetness and generosity of spirit that's rather uplifting. I don't think I've ever said that about a book. It's not a word I use lightly. Trevor Noah is a rare person, able to appreciate the good stuff in his life and not obsess over the considerable amount of injustice he has experienced.I'm not usually a big fan of celebrity memoirs or autobiographies, but this is exceptional. If you have the patience, listen to it as a n audiobook. Otherwise, consider reading it. He's a smart guy, a good writer, and an astute observer of humanity, government, politics, and relationships. Insightful, witty, and entertaining, I highly recommend it.

The colors and writing were perfect. Mines came with a small smudge like of hand cream but I got it off quickly with windex. FYI sprayed the windex on the paper towel not the notebook and passed it gently over the cover. It is a matte finish but the colors look vibrant and the notebook looks great. The lines inside are college ruled. It is a gift for teacher appreciation day and I think the recipient will love it since it contains a heart felt message on the cover. This was a perfect touch to the gift bags my daughter gave all her teachers as she was leaving the 5th grade. They truly loved them.

This book is definitely a 3am win!That being said...This is a totally F-ing amazing book! It's real, overworked, frustrated beyond belief, about to loose your mind at 3am, inner parent monologue. I originally bought it for a friend who was having some serious issues getting her little one to sleep. She called me after one particularly rough night & thanked me profusely for giving her the book. I guess it's nice to know that you're not alone in your child's bedtime st ruggles. It may not actually be all your fault and you may have a relatively normal child & are not in fact a horrible parent. A little laughter, and vulgar support, can go an awfully long way. I've since given it as a gift many times. I plan on continuing to gift it as long as the people around me continue to not learn from the couple before them and keep having babies. Who then refuse to sleep. And so on & so forth.*If you haven't already you MUST Google the celebrity reads of this book! Jennifer Garner & Samuel L. Jackson are laugh out loud funny. Samuel L. Jackson should narrate a book for every single stage of life, from being born to the grave. We'd come in & go out laughing! This book is one that will be shared from one exhausted, fed up, delusional, red eyed, sleep deprived parent to another. 'Cause sometimes all you can do is F-ing laugh. At yourself and at each other. Also, the pictures are really beautiful. Ready for some adult humor, that will tickle most parents funny bone? Well, this little book is for you! Our son, now an adult, was the worse little offender at bedtime. His reluctance to sleep was legion in our extended family, so much so that the only time we received a good night's rest, was on the rare occasion when we had him spend the night with our relatives. I gifted the book to another parent, presented a copy to my son, and shared with one of my coworkers: the laughter was immediate and continuous. Honestly, some of the rhymes were not the best that could be imagined, but the use of such colorful language, in this context was hilariously surprising. I am reminded of someone like Betty White swearing on SNL; you will most likely be smiling now if you recall the moment! Be forewarned: if you are offended by earthy language, or the use of such language in regard to the sleeping habits of kids, this book is not for you. My grandmother, for example, would not apprecia te Mr. Mansbach's book. But if you are open minded, have a funny bone and suffered through your kiddo's unwillingness to get to bed, you will find this little book a real treat! Enjoy!!!

It's a simple concept and I've only being doing it for a week but I find myself looking for things to be thankful for, find myself adding lines below the three provided and writing in the margins...all because I want to... This is just what I was looking for. Cute design, motivational and inspirational quotes without being religion or bible-focused, short and sweet places to write. I could have used a regular notebook or journal but I did not want one like that. I want to jot stuff down without writing a lot. For people complaining about the repetitiveness: get some creativity flowing! Use stickers and washi to customize the pages to your liking! As someone who has what she would consider a fairly successful marriage, I was also curious to see what these two had to say about relationships.I think the core principles of this book are things that anyone could agree on, regardless of their faith and beliefs. 1) Communication is key. 2) Marriage is hard work. 3) You should get to know someone before you actually marry them. 4) Complacency is very dangerous to a marriage. Hearing their love story and the struggles they went through as a long distance couple reminded me of the first year my husband and I were together. We spent our entire first year apart with me being in NY and him being in SC. We saw each other in person every 2-3 months but most of the time was spent in totally different states. This forced us t o learn how to communicate with each other right off the bat, and I think our marriage is stronger because of it.Where I think the Roloffs lose a lot of people is the constant talk of Christianity. I understand and admire that God is a big part of their life and their marriage, but I honestly believe if they toned it down just a bit that their overall message would be heard so much louder and clearer. The overall message of this book is a great one that many people could learn from, but I think the Roloffs are isolating themselves to a specific fan base by constantly talking about God. It is entirely possible to live a “love letter life” without Jesus being a part of your life. I don’t think one way is better than the other, and I don’t think the Roloffs do either honestly. They seem like good, honest, caring people. Unfortunately there are a few times the book comes off as a bit preachy.Regardless, this was an easy read with an excellent overall message. There would be le ss divorce in this world if people actually abided by some of these principles instead of rushing into marriage. My curiosity about how other people live their lives would probably prompt me to read another book by them as it was much better written than I anticipated. However, if you are not a religious person or if you are easily offended by people who talk about religion a lot, this is not the book for you.

This vendor is NOT selling the publication of Rilke's book, but has gotten the text and laid it out (probably with MS Word, horrible for layout) and done a cheap printing of it. Am I going to return it? Probably not, only because it's more effort to pack it, take it to the P.O. and mail. But I'm very angry about this book, I do publication layout professionally, and am an editor, so the extra spaces between words, the dropped punctuation, and visually awful layout is an abomination to Rilke's work. I know how they did it: they stripped the text out of an e-book, put it into Word and left-aligned, never proofed it, and sent it to China to be printed. Monstrous. Never buy from this outfit. Whatever kind of writer or creative artist you are, Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet is a voice worth listening to. The letters were written in the early 1900s when Rilke was about 30 years old. He wrote ten letters to a young poet named Franz Kappus, offering not only advice but a philosophy on how to cultivate the creative spirit. As a fiction author with three novels out, I often get discouraged. We writers know that art and struggle go hand and hand. I’ve read all the pep blogs about following your passion and keeping the faith, recognizing the common Van Gogh blues, blah, blah, blah. Rilke’s book is such a refreshing look at why a person writes at all. He addresses doubt, loneliness vs solitude, love, and patience. This is probably one of the most impressive of books I’ve read on this subject. The thoughts in this little 100-page book is a true source and one to keep on the night stand. I love to open a page at random and see what Rilke has to say to me for the day. Page 61 told me this morning that “We must embrace struggle. Every living thing conforms to it. Everything in nature grows and struggles in its own way, establishing its own identity, insisting on it at all cost, against all resistance.” This book is for any artist who wants inspiration on how to live as an artist.

The graduate of Kent State University is a former newspaper reporter/photographer, and operated his own commercial photo studio, shooting sports, weddings, portraits, fashion, architecture, product photography, and travel images. For 22 years he was a principal in CCS/PR, Inc., one of the largest public relations/marketing firms based in San Diego, working on press conferences, press kits, media tours, and sponsored photo trade magazine articles for Eastman Kodak Company and other imaging companies. His 2500 articles and accompanying photos have appeared inside and on the covers of hundreds of magazines, including Popular Photography, Rangefinder, and Professional Photographer. For the last decade, Busch has devoted much of his time to sharing his photographic expe rtise, both in publications, and in seminar/workshops he hosts at the Cleveland Photographic Society School of Photography. He has been a call-in guest for 21 different radio shows nationally and in major markets, including WTOP-AM (Washington), KYW-AM (Philadelphia), USA Network (Daybreak USA), WPHM-AM (Detroit), KMJE-FM (Sacramento), CJAD-AM (Montreal), WBIX-AM (Boston), ABC Radio Network (Jonathan & Mary Show). He’s also been a call-in guest for one Canadian television show, and appeared live on Breakfast Television in Toronto, the Today Show of the Great White North. With a total of more than 200 books to his credit, Busch has had as many as five books appear simultaneously in the Amazon.com Top 25 Digital Photography Books, and when Michael Carr of About.com named the top five digital photography books for beginners, the initial #1 and #2 choices were Busch’s Digital Photography All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies and Mastering Digital Photography.
